Grain growers get granular with energy efficiency upgrades

Reducing operational costs are becoming a strong focal point for grain and fodder growers across Queensland. Fortunately, by getting granular with their energy infrastructure, grain growers can improve the productivity and profitability of their business.
For example, an energy efficiency audit carried out by the Queensland Farmers’ Federation (QFF) found a Queensland grains and feedlot farm could save up to $41,000 in operating costs and reduce their energy consumption by 44% by investing and altering their existing energy infrastructure.
Here are five ways grain and fodder producers can improve the energy consumption of their business:
-
Get an energy audit - free independent audits are available through the Queensland Farmers’ Federation’s Energy Savers program, giving grain growers a clear picture of where they’re losing energy and what upgrades will deliver the best return.
-
Invest in modern motors: Consider upgrading all augers, conveyors, and ventilation fans to premium-efficiency motors in order to reduce energy consumption and enhance overall operational efficiency.
- Upgrade grain dryers: Modern, energy-efficient grain dryers use advanced control systems and heat recovery, reducing fuel use by up to 30%. This means lower bills and improved grain quality.
- Switch to LED lighting: Replacing outdated lighting in sheds and storage areas with LEDs cuts energy consumption by up to 80%. LEDs also last longer, reducing maintenance.
- Install renewable energy systems: Solar panels can offset on-farm electricity usage, helping offset with rising energy prices while reducing emissions.
Upgrading to energy-efficient systems can come with large upfront costs. A concessional QRIDA Sustainability Loan of up to $1.3 million can help eligible grain and fodder growers fund the purchase and installation of on-farm energy efficient upgrades.
