Free QRIDA event to help farming families navigate succession
22 March 2024
An information event in Mackay will give primary producers the tools and information they need to plan for the future of the family farm through succession arrangements. The Queensland Rural and Industry Development Authority (QRIDA) is holding an information session, ‘Leaving a legacy, succession planning for family farms,' from 3 to 5.30pm on Wednesday 27 March at the Country Women’s Association Hall in Mackay.
QRIDA Regional Area Manager for Central Coast and Whitsundays, Tegan McBride, is hosting the event and said McKays Solicitors Senior Associate, Naomi Schulte, will also be guest-speaking at the information session.
“At this event, I will be explaining how QRIDA can financially assist families with succession arrangements like handing over the operation to the next generation or buying into the existing family farm,” Tegan said.
“Without formal agreements, nobody knows where they stand, so McKays Solicitors Senior Associate, Naomi Schulte, will also be guest-speaking about the key legal aspects of rural succession planning that every producer needs to consider.
“Producers know the importance of planning and managing business risks to ensure they get the most out of their crops and livestock, and it’s just as important they think long-term about what legacy they want to leave behind and how they are going to achieve a smooth transition.”
Tegan has experience helping diverse primary producers access QRIDA financial assistance for succession arrangements, including Mackay cane growers Tate and Sarah Siddle.
Tate said his QRIDA Regional Area Manager, Tegan, was a great help when he and his partner, Sarah, applied for a First Start Loan to purchase the family farm from Sarah’s father.
“Tegan is good to deal with. She has a wide-range of contacts and her advice on cashflow estimates was really good,” Tate said.
“Now we can focus on our farm goals including to increase production and get 10 to 15 per cent more cane coming off the property through better management practices.
“There seems to be a good future for cane growers – we’ve had a good wet season and sugar prices are doing well – and it’s important for QRIDA to help young growers wanting to get into the industry because it can be really hard without that support.”
